Key takeaways
- 16.27 million cruise passengers sailed the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda in 2025, 44% of all cruising worldwide.
- St. Maarten and the U.S. Virgin Islands have ranked top in per-passenger spending in the region.
- Cruise buyers decide fast. Most have a few hours ashore, so they pick a store before they step off the ship.
- They pick on their phones: Instagram, Google Maps and now AI answers.
- Island jewelers who show up in all three, and answer on WhatsApp, get the walk-ins.
A couple on a cruise has four hours in Philipsburg. They want a real piece to remember the trip. There are dozens of jewelry stores on Front Street.
Which one do they walk into?
Usually the one they already picked on their phone, on the ship, the night before.
The size of the opportunity
Cruising is bigger than ever. 37.2 million people took an ocean cruise in 2025, up 7.5%. The Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda carried 16.27 million of them, 44% of the global total. (Seatrade Cruise News, from CLIA's 2026 report)
And they spend. The last big Caribbean study by BREA for the FCCA found passengers spent an average of $101.52 per port visit, with St. Maarten and the U.S. Virgin Islands at the top for per-passenger spending. (Seatrade Cruise News, 2018)
Watches and jewelry are a big part of that story. In that study, 15.5% of passengers bought watches or jewelry, down from 19.8% before, though the buyers who did buy spent more. Fewer buyers spending more means the stores that get picked win bigger.
Where cruise buyers decide
We asked Google's AI Mode where to buy fine jewelry in the Caribbean. It named St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Aruba and Grand Cayman, and a short list of stores in each. Every store on that list just got a free recommendation to a buyer with money and a few hours to spend.
That's the new path:
- Before the trip: they ask Google or ChatGPT where to shop at each port.
- On the ship: they scroll Instagram and look up the stores on Google Maps.
- At the port: they walk straight to the store they already picked, and message on WhatsApp if they have a question.
AI is part of that path now. 45% of consumers say they use AI tools to find local businesses. (BrightLocal, 2026)
What island jewelers can do
1. Win the Google Maps search at your port
Fill out your Google profile completely: the right category, real photos of your store and pieces, hours that match ship days, and steady reviews that mention the island and what people bought. How to get into the Maps top 3.
2. Get named in AI answers
AI tools recommend stores they can confirm in many places: your Google profile, your website, cruise and travel guides, Reddit threads and reviews. A page on your site that clearly says what you sell, for whom, at which port, makes you easier to recommend. Why AI recommends your competitor.
3. Make the scroll stop on your piece
Cruise buyers scroll on the ship. A short film of one stunning piece in an island setting beats a photo of a full display case. 85% of people say a video has convinced them to buy. (Wyzowl, 2026) That's what CGI and AI campaign films are built for.

4. Answer on WhatsApp, fast
Buyers on a ship use WhatsApp because it works on Wi-Fi. If they message the night before and hear back in the morning, they've already picked someone else.
Why this works for island stores
CBM was built between Miami and the Caribbean. We've built visibility and booking for transport and tour businesses in the Bahamas, St. Lucia and Turks & Caicos, and campaign films for a Diamond District jeweler that sold an $85,000 ring from one campaign. Island jewelry is where those two meet.
